Cleaning Old Timber Joists

It turned out that the horizontal timber trusses in the bathroom ceiling area weren’t structural, so to make things easier to build, the builders took them out temporarily.  This way they could properly insulate the roof, support the chimney breast and make the high level crack repairs.

With 100 years of embedded soot and dust, the timber joists were in definite need of a clean. So, while they were out, I figured it would be much less messy to take them into the garden and give them a good scrub down outside.  With an IKEA scrubbing brush (that I’m sure many of you likely recognise), a good jet of water, and a bit of elbow grease – they all came up really nicely!

Check out the before and after…
