Stripping the wallpaper in the hallway has been like the movie Groundhog Day. Beneath the original peach coloured wallpaper, was another layer of peach wallpaper (with peach flowered boarder), beneath which was some fairly recent peach coloured clay plaster. So, although satisfying to have now almost finished the ground floor hallway, it looks like a slightly grubby version of the peach walls we started with!
We have broken up the hallway wallpaper stripping into a few more manageable chunks so as not to get too overwhelmed. Last weekend we spent a day stripping the paper in the front section of hallway, and this weekend we spent a day attacking the tall stair wall. We reached the top corner by taping the scraper to the end of our mop handle to extend our reach. You can see Alex’s arm in the last photo as he leans somewhat precariously across the opening!
The vinyl wallpaper sheets which came off in one go made great water resistant drop sheets for up the staircase. I think we have about 2-3 more sessions to go before we finish the hallway as we are also including the first floor in ‘Phase 1’ so it matches throughout.
